Winterset Park located in Manassas, VA!

Last week we visited Winterset Park located in the City of Manassas. This was a great park for all ages.  There were a few different sets of playground equipment, as well as two sets of basketball courts.

The playground has three different equipment structures, which include two different slides and lots of different climbing equipment.  My toddler loved the climbing wall and wanted to do it over and over again.  There is a unique piece that I haven’t yet seen at a playground; the half circle with two tires underneath is a new modern-like see-saw.  Behind that was a fun little zipline.  Once we got the hang of it we had lots of fun on that too! There are four regular swings and two infant swings as well.  The ground of the park is mulch and there are picnic benches around the outside of the parameter for the parents to sit and watch their kiddos play.

Looking to have a picnic?  This park is for you, as there are plenty of picnic tables with a grill centrally located.  Don’t forget your basketball or sidewalk chalk as their are two different basketball courts to play at.  If you are in the City of Manassas, make sure you stop to visit this park!

Rocky Run Park in Arlington, VA!

Rocky Run Park in Arlington, VA!

Thinking of Spring yet?  We are! Rocky Run Park in Arlington, VA is such a fun park to visit! This park recently had a new makeover in 2014 (phase 1) and has something for everyone to enjoy!  Part of Phase 2 is renovation of the restrooms, so there currently are not any restrooms at this park.  This park is located in the Clarendon area of Arlington.  Included at this park are basketball courts, covered pavilion, climbing wall, modern style playground equipment, rope pyramid, sand area, swings, a large tube slide and so much more!

Address: 1109 N Barton St, Arlington, VA 22201

There is one area of the park geared towards 5-12 year old with lots of climbing equipment and another area for 0-5 year olds.  The middle of the climbing equipment looks like a spider web.  It connects to a larger play structure, which includes ropes to climb, a climbing wall, and a curving tube slide.  This area also includes two rope-like tire swings and an orange piece of circular equipment.  The orange equipment is round shaped and is made for kids to grab a hold of it and spin around in circles.

The playground geared towards 0-5 year olds is where we spent most of our time! This section was awesome and unlike any other park I have been to before.  There are benches all around for the adults to sit at.  I would say this is more of a modern style play ground.  There was a rubbery hop scotch, sand pit, lots of little cars on springs on the “rubbery road”, as well as a little cute market set up to be on the side of the “rubber road”.

Also included at the 0-5 year old playground is a smaller playground structure as well as 4 infant swings.  My little ones couldn’t get over all the choices of equipment to play on.  Of course it was one of the nicer days, so it was pretty crowded.

kiddieplayground2

In addition to all the exciting playgrounds, Rocky Run Park also has a pavilion, a cemented area leading to the lower part of this park, which includes two basketball courts and a lighted turf field.  Although we didn’t bring any, I saw a bunch of kids riding their bikes down the sidewalk to the fields.

This, in my opinion, is a must visit park.  If you don’t live in Arlington, pack a picnic lunch and check this park out! You won’t be disappointed!

Right next to the playground is a basketball court.  During our time at this park, there were a handful of kids riding some of their ride on toys on the court.  Unfortunately there are not any bathrooms at this park.  There are benches and a picnic table as well some shaded areas . Nearby is a parking lot, but it is for the Fire Station only.  There is plenty of metered parking along the streets, that’s where we parked.  If you live nearby, I recommend visiting this park and letting the kids play and explore.

Butler Holmes (1 of 8)

This two-acre park is in the midst of a renovation and have made it through phase one.  Phase two will be completed by the end of 2015.  A smaller version of the “climbing Eiffel tower” is the big highlight of this park.  Although my kids are younger, this rope climbing tower is more for the 6-12 year old crowd.  Also included at this park are swings and a swinging pole.  There is a small paved path, great for the kiddos to ride bikes or walk to the basketball court.  Located by the basketball court is a water fountain.

There is a Picnic Pavilion that can be rented, by clicking here.  There are also more picnic tables and a few charcoal grills near the basketball court.

If you are located in Arlington or are looking for a fun park to check out.  Make sure to add this one to your list to visit.  We look forward to re-visiting once the tot lot is added.

Dawson Terrace Community Center is located off of Taft Road.  This park has street parking as well as a parking lot.  Included in this park is a large open field, basketball court, volleyball court, playground with two tot lots and swings, walking/hiking trail as well as the community center.  There is a historic landmark, The Dawson-Bailey House here as well, which is where the name Dawson came from.

Our boys had a lot of fun at this park, it was also nice because although it was not fully fenced in, there was a fence facing the woods and parking lot to help the kids safe.  There are two different playgrounds, one is a larger piece of equipment with two wrap around slides and the other one is geared more for the younger ones and is much smaller.  This piece of equipment has a slide and climbing equipment, but is surrounded by sand.  So we took out some sand toys and the boys had a blast! There is also a piece of climbing equipment for the older kids.  Swings, there are six total; 4 regular swings and 2 infant swings.   Directly behind the “play area” is where you can enter the Palisades Trail.  Beautiful trail, especially in the Fall.

collage2The Dawson-Baily House, a beautiful stone house, is expected to be the oldest building in Arlington, patented in 1696.  From the back of the house, is a large open field that is used for soccer.  During our time at the park there were five different dogs playing and running around.  There is also a basketball court at the community center.  Right next to the house is the community center where they host events daily.

If you are in Arlington and haven’t had a chance to visit Dawson Terrace Community Center, check it out!

This park is located across the parking lot from T.C. Williams High School and is especially known for their aquatic center and recreation park.  Outside of the recreation facility is a nice community garden plot center and a shaded dog park.  The community garden plot was fenced in and was well marked.  The shaded dog park is located right below the playground and pavilion area.  While we were there, there were about 12 dogs playing around in the shade.  Although it is narrow, it is a long patch of flat, grassy area for the dogs to play and relax.  Please note the dog park is not fenced in.

The playground equipment includes two slides, monkey bars and a climbing rope.  There are four swings total (two infant and two regular).  As for different playing fields, there is a volleyball court, tennis courts, basketball courts and baseball and soccer fields.   The pavilion is in between the playground and basketball court.  There are also two grills right near the pavilion. Directly behind the pavilion is the part of the park that is for dogs to play and relax.  It is very shaded.  There are walking trails all around the park up to the Aquatic center.

I was pleasantly surprised when we pulled up to this neighborhood park and found several nice pieces of play equipment. The kids didn’t want to leave because of the different features on the equipment that you don’t see at every park. If you live in the City of Manassas around the Oakenshaw Neighborhood, check out this nice park!
