collageThere are different parts of North Hills Park.  The pictures above are of the tot lot, playground, trail and pavilion.  Just a short drive down the road are some tennis, basketball courts and swimming pool. Although there is not much parking, this park has plenty of shade.  The playground is a short path away from the road and has a bench for the parents to watch the kiddos play and explore.  There is a nice piece of playground equipment, as well as a tunnel to climb through.  There is an open courtyard to play and the pavilion is completely covered with several picnic tables.  There is also a nicely sized grill, trash cans and restrooms.  The pavilion is available to rent as well.  The Reston Association trails connect through this park as well.

If you live in the North Hills neighborhood or are nearby, stop on by to this family friendly park and plan to have a picnic and go on a nature walk.

Glade Recreation Area has a large parking lot.  There is so much to do here and you don’t have to belong to the Reston Association to enjoy some of the perks! There are tennis and basketball courts.  My boys had a ton of fun at the tot lot; it’s great for all ages. The playground itself is tucked in the furthest away from the parking lot.  There’s a little climbing wall and slide.  There is a whole back wall fence that has other play equipment such as a steering wheel and a little kids picnic area.  Two infant swings and two regular swings are included in this play area.   In addition to the little kids picnic area, there is another picnic table with a covering that will keep you shaded as well.   After we played, we took a stroll on the walking trail.  In addition, this park has restrooms, trash cans, benches and a water fountain.  If you belong to the Reston Association you can also enjoy the pool at Glade Recreation Area.

If you are in the Hunter Woods area or nearby, this is a good park to put on your visit list!

Triple Crown Rec Area & Steeplechase Rec Area in Reston, VA!

Triple Crown Rec Area & Steeplechase Rec Area in Reston, VA!

During one of our park crawls in Reston we headed to several Reston Association Tot Lots to check them out. I’m a big fan of the trail system both paved and unpaved in Reston. You can absolutely get lost on some of the more natural trails. In this review I’m combining two different play areas since Triple Crown Rec Area has a parking lot and picnic shelter with portable restrooms. Steeplechase Rec Area has a playground area with a bench. For visitors you can park at the Triple Crown parking lot and walk down the mulch trail across the street to get to the Steeplechase Rec Area. If you follow the trail for about 5 minutes you’ll find the Steeplechase Rec Area. This play area can only be reached by the trail system with no parking available.

The Triple Crown Rec Area has a large picnic pavilion and tables with portable restrooms, grills, parking lot and two swings. The Picnic Pavilion known as The Pony Barn can be rented through the Reston Association.

Steeplechase Rec Area can be reached via the trail system with one of the entrances being on Triple Crown Rd. Even though it is a mulch trail, a stroller or wagon wouldn’t have too hard of a time reaching the play area. The boys enjoyed crossing the small bridge to get to the play area. The play area includes a small piece of play equipment and swings.

If you live in the Hunter Woods District of Reston this would be the perfect park to walk to and burn off some energy. It’s nice that the playground is fenced in since it sits pretty close to the parking lot. If you live in the south Reston area you should check out Hunter Woods Park.

Lake Anne Park in Reston, VA!

Lake Anne Park in Reston, VA!

Today we checked out Lake Anne Park in Reston, VA with some friends. Lake Anne Park is one of several parks maintained by the Reston Association. The park includes small tot lot, spray fountains, indoor restrooms and pavilion, sand volleyball, basketball and tennis court.

Address: 11301 North Shore Drive, Reston, VA 20190

The basketball, tennis and volleyball courts are really for members of the Reston Association only but the tot lot and spray fountains are open to everyone. The tot lot only has one piece of equipment that has several slides and monkey bars. The spray fountain area is on the small side but has two red buttons for the kids to push to start the different parts of the fountain. Right next to the fountain is a small picnic pavilion and an indoor restroom. Both the tot lot and spray fountains have tons of shade so it’s a great place to take the kids to beat the heat. If you live near Lake Anne you can walk to the park on one of the many Reston trails.

The kids had a great time playing in the water and it wasn’t overcrowded this afternoon. If you head to the Lake Anne Park make sure you pack a swimsuit!

South Lakes Drive Park in Reston, VA!

South Lakes Drive Park in Reston, VA!

I have to apologize for the pictures ahead of time. My oldest fell on the way to the park and wasn’t really into playing at the time but of course the youngest wanted to stay and play…fun times! South Lakes Drive Park in Reston includes baseball, soccer field and if you follow the trail in between the two you’ll find the playground. You can get to the playground by either walking from the adjacent townhomes, following the path that runs along South Lakes Drive or parking in the lot and walking down.

Address: South Lakes Drive Park

The playground is in complete shade with several picnic tables. The park has one piece of play equipment and it was in great shape when we were there. One of the many Reston paths run right by the park so if the kids don’t want to play you can head out on the paved trail. Porta Potties are available in the parking lot and when we were there they had just been cleaned.

If you live in the South Lakes District area of Reston or if you’re looking for a nice shady park check out the South Lakes Drive Park!

Stratton Woods Park in Reston, VA!

Stratton Woods Park in Reston, VA!
Since the good weather is still upon us we checked out Stratton Woods Park in Reston, VA. This cute park is located off of Fox Mill Road and Fairfax County Parkway.
The 30-acre park has lot of different activities including baseball fields, soccer fields, a tennis court, volleyball court, basketball courts, hiking trails and a playground. The playground equipment was in great shape and in the summer time would have plenty of shade since it sits back in the middle of a nature area. Once you park in the lot you head down the trail to reach the equipment. I didn’t see any restrooms but according to the Fairfax County site they do have facilities on the park property.

There are a few picnic tables around the playground so the little ones can take a break or enjoy a snack. My kids really loved this park and I can’t wait to take them back in the spring time when the trees are filled out. The great part about this Fairfax County park is it’s location to single family homes and townhomes so if you live in the area you should check it out!

Walker Nature Education Center and Trails in Reston, VA!

Walker Nature Education Center and Trails in Reston, VA!

Yesterday we checked out the Walker Nature Education Center in Reston, VA. The Walker Education Center is located amongst 1300 acres of open space in Fairfax County and maintained by the Reston Association.

Address: 11450 Glade Drive, Reston, VA 20191

The Nature House located off of Glade Drive has a small collection of reptiles and fish for the kids to check out. Also a few exhibits for them to touch and sort. They also had a nature scavenger hunt sheet while you’re out walking the trails. The Nature House has super clean restrooms and a parking lot.

The best part of the education center was the 2 miles of loop trails throughout the open space. The trails are clearly marked by logs with resting benches throughout. The trails are either gravel or dirt and can accommodate bikes, strollers and wagons.  If you’re a geocacher there are lots of hidden caches found in the area.

For us the Nature House wasn’t much but the trails were great and in the summer time would be completely in the shade. If you live nearby you should check it out on a nice day!

Lake Fairfax Park in Reston, VA!

Lake Fairfax Park in Reston, VA!

This past week we checked out Lake Fairfax Park in Reston, VA. Lake Fairfax Park is a 476-acre park in Fairfax County nestled between single family homes in the Lake Fairfax Estates community.

Address: 1400 Lake Fairfax Drive, Reston, VA 20190

The park offers campgrounds, tons of trails and picnic areas under large shade trees. If you like to geo-cache there are many hidden caches in the park. The lake has paddle boats you can rent but no swimming and windsurfing is allowed on the lake. A large walkway leads you down to the small marina where you can rent the paddle boats or drop in a canoe or kayak. Fishing is permitted from the docks but not while in boat on the lake.

For the kids, The Water Mine waterpark has an admission fee and includes a lazy river and waterslides. A carousel is also available for the kids and free of charge. If the waterpark and carousel aren’t enough there is a small playground for the kids.

The kids and I had a great time walking around the lake along the trails. The carousel was also a favorite along with the playground. We’ll definitely be returning to camp or just walk the trails at Lake Fairfax Park!

Brown’s Chapel Park in Reston, VA!

Brown’s Chapel Park in Reston, VA!

Today we visited Brown’s Chapel Park located in Reston, VA in Fairfax County. The park is located near Lake Newport one of the four lakes in the Reston area. Brown’s Chapel Park is located off of Baron Cameron Road and Brown’s Chapel Road across from the Lake Anne Plaza.

Address: 1686 Browns Chapel Rd, Reston, VA 20194

The park includes a small tot lot, baseball fields, basketball and volleyball courts. It also has plenty of areas to exercise including paved and natural trails that are part of the trail system that runs throughout Reston. Restrooms and picnic tables are available as well. Brown’s Chapel can be rented for meetings and small gatherings.

Lake access is available for fishing and hand carried boats. Single family homes, townhouses and condos line most of the shore of Lake Newport but trails weave in and out of the neighborhoods and have plenty of shade on hot days. Also this is a great place to take the family geo-caching.

The area is beautifully wooded and the kids had fun walking trails by the lake and through the wooded neighborhoods. Markers are located along the paths with mileage for each pathway. Numerous maps are available online for the different sections of Reston. The North Point Map highlights the different paths in and near Brown’s Chapel Park.

The park is a great place to take the kids for some exercise or just a leisurely stroll along the trails. Once you’re done you can walk over to the Lake Anne Plaza for something to eat.
