Poplar Tree Park in Chantilly, VA

Poplar Tree Park in Chantilly, VA

Last week we checked out Poplar Tree Park in Chantilly, VA. This Fairfax County Park is located off Stringfellow Road between Route 50 and Route 29. The park is located amongst older single family homes and newer planned communites including townhomes, condos, and single family homes.

Address: 4619-4699 Stringfellow Rd, Chantilly, VA 20151

Poplar Tree Park is more of a sports park complex but it does have a set of equipment for the kids to play on. The park has 4 softball/baseball fields, two turf soccer/football fields, grass soccer field and walking/hiking trails. The park does have clean restrooms and not porta potties. The playground equipment is newer. But there was plenty of shade for the equipment during the morning hours.

I probably won’t return to the park but for a local community park this one has a lot to offer local sports clubs. The fields are in great shape with lots of bleachers for spectators.

The active portion of the park is where you’ll find the play equipment. The equipment is for the school aged crowd but there a few small slides for the little ones. There isn’t any shade around the equipment so on a hot day you wouldn’t last very long. The restrooms on this side of the park are porta potties and when we were there they had just been cleaned and restocked.

We visit the natural portion of the park all the time. It has some great trails for all ages. Below you’ll find a picture of the trail map so you can map out your hike.  A stroller or wagon couldn’t make through all the trails but a backpack would be perfect since the terrain isn’t too terribly tough. We normally park at the Walney Visitor Center to check out the small nature center then walk the trails to the pond. You can also park at the pond and walk in the reverse direction. At the visitor center you can see plenty of reptiles and amphibians to look at along with other historical information. Also inside is a clean restroom that can be accessed when the Visitor Center is open. Around the visitor center you’ll find different structures that made up the Walney Farm. We visited the old dairy storage room and told the boys about how they had to store items that would spoil underground where it was cool and food would spoil slower. Next to the visitor center there is also an old smokehouse where they have artificial meat hanging showing how they would take care of meat. The garden is also nearby where the park authority plants vegetables and fruit during the growing season.

The E.C. Lawrence Park is one of our favorites. If you enjoy hiking or just looking for a new playground check out this great Fairfax County Park!!

The boys and I have checked out both the swimming pool and the tot lot at different times. The boys had a great time at the indoor leisure pool which features a small lazy river, 2-story slide and water play equipment. My boys aren’t old enough to do the large slide but it looked like a great time.

The playground area next to the Recreation Center is more for the school age crowd. It has tall slides and other motor development elements that little kids would have a hard time doing without giving you a heart attack. The hiking trail entrance is right next to the play area and the boys had a great time on the short hiking trail. Strollers and wagons wouldn’t make it on this trail.

Another great REC Center in Fairfax County and perfect for the kiddos and parents during the winter time to swim or take a class.

Richard W. Jones Park in Chantilly, VA!

Richard W. Jones Park in Chantilly, VA!

Last week we checked out Richard W. Jones Park located near the Pleasant Valley Golf Club in Chantilly, VA. This park can be reached through the parking lot of the Pleasant Valley Golf Club.

Address: Richard W. Jones Park

The park includes one piece of play equipment, tire swing, regular & toddler swings, and a few ride on pieces all in great condition. A picnic pavilion is near the play equipment and a very large grassy area. A small paved trail leads you to neighboring single family homes. Sadly there are no restrooms near the park. During certain times of the day the play area has shade over the equipment but for the most part the equipment is in the sun.

This was a nice park located off of Pleasant Valley Road in Chantilly just down from Cox Farms. When the trees are in full bloom you can’t see the park from the road. There is a nice buffer of trees between the kids and busy Pleasant Valley Road. If you live nearby in the South Riding or Virginia Run Communities you should check it out!
